The regeneration works along the Huerva River, carried out by the joint venture Último Huerva (comprised of MLN and Integra Ambiental), are progressing as planned. Having completed virtually all of the civil engineering work, the focus is now on the green transformation of the corridor with the start of a massive reforestation effort.
The project is advancing according to schedule, having already transformed key aspects of Zaragoza’s urban landscape. To date, COPHA’s actions have resulted in:
- Sopesens Park: Creation of a new park, along with steps and tiered seating that improve the connection to the river. A sediment retention basin has also been installed to improve water quality.
- Bruno Solano and Gran Vía Parks: Construction of new walkways, paths, and stairs that facilitate pedestrian access.
- Sanitary and Urban Planning: Comprehensive renovation of the sanitation system on Manuel Lasala Street and paving of both this street and Marina Española Street.
- Emperor Park: Creation of a new green space equipped with its corresponding retention basin.
- Sustainability in Goya Park: Implementation of bioengineering techniques using wooden structures for bank stabilization.
A 2.5-kilometer green lung
With the civil works practically complete, the reforestation phase begins this week. Heavy machinery is already on site preparing the planting holes for the first trees.
The environmental impact of the project is massive. A total of 1,371 trees and almost 190,000 shrubs and flowering plants will be planted, covering a 2.5-kilometer stretch of riverside environment.
This intervention not only seeks aesthetic improvement but also to restore the Huerva River ecosystem, transforming it into a biodiverse corridor that connects the city with its river in a more natural and accessible way.
