A Key Event for the Future of Road Infrastructure The technical conference “Smart and Digitalized Roads,” organized by the Aragon branch of the Spanish Association of Civil Engineers (Colegio de Ingenieros de Caminos, Canales y Puertos) in collaboration with the Mariano López Navarro Chair at the University of Zaragoza, was successfully held on Wednesday, May 14, 2025, in the Aula Magna of the Paraninfo Building in Zaragoza. The event was presided over by Rosa Bolea, Rector of the University of Zaragoza; Daniel López, CEO of Grupo MLN; and Joaquín Royo, Director of the Mariano López Navarro Chair.

This event brought together leading experts and professionals from various sectors to explore the latest advances in connected vehicles and roads, a crucial topic in the development of modern and sustainable infrastructure. Modernizing roads has a direct impact on competitiveness and economic development, as more efficient and safer roads facilitate the transport of goods and people, reducing travel times and associated costs. This, in turn, boosts the productivity and competitiveness of businesses, contributing to the country’s economic growth.

 

Through innovative conferences and enriching sessions, the challenges and opportunities presented by the digitalization and interconnection of transportation routes were addressed.

The closing ceremony featured speeches by Mr. Octavio Toledo, Minister of Public Works, Housing, Logistics, and Territorial Cohesion of the Government of Aragon, and Mr. Rafael López Guarga, Dean of the Aragon Chapter of the Spanish Association of Civil Engineers.

The Mariano López Navarro Chair of Civil Engineering and Building Construction, together with the Aragon branch of the Spanish Association of Civil Engineers, seeks to strengthen collaboration between universities, businesses, and public administrations to share synergies and strategies that support and facilitate research and knowledge transfer throughout the region. Its objective is to promote the dissemination of all advances, studies, and analyses that can help public administrations make decisions based on the latest technological developments.
