Work has just begun on the first phase of the Huerva River regeneration project in Zaragoza, with the goal of completion by summer 2025. This project, focused on improving biodiversity, landscape regeneration, and the hydromorphological restoration of the river, has initiated key interventions along its various sections.
The first phase of the project is divided into two sections. The first covers 1.2 kilometers from the Blasco del Cacho Bridge to the covered section on Gran Vía, an area with water quality and vegetation problems, characterized by its narrow channel and steep banks, which hinder access to the river. The second section extends 1.9 kilometers from the Miguel Servet Street bridge to the confluence with the Ebro River.
In total, the intervention will cover approximately 150,000 square meters and has the support of the Ebro River Basin Authority and INAGA (the Aragonese Institute for Environmental Management). As part of the project, a storm tank will be built at the intersection of Marina Española Street and Paseo Mariano Renovales. This tank will allow for the storage of water during heavy rains and reduce runoff into the river. Sewer pipes will also be replaced along several sections of the right bank, as well as the collectors between Marina Española and La Luz.
In addition, the project includes the modernization of the drinking water supply network in various streets, removing old asbestos cement and cast iron pipes in areas such as Marina Española, Arzobispo Morcillo, Gascón de Gotor, Viva España, and Manuel Lasala.
Cleaning, debris removal, and street furniture removal will also be carried out to prepare the area.
Three pedestrian paths will be created along the riverbed, with permeable and floodable paving that follows the natural contours of the area, blending into the landscape and minimizing earthworks.
Finally, work will be done on the regeneration of local vegetation, eliminating invasive species and taking care of the phytosanitary conditions of the native flora.
