The projects began in 2003 and are part of an ambitious plan to make Aragon a key ski destination.
A new parking lot with over 50,000 m² of usable space, bridges connecting the Portalet parking area to its facilities, a ski walkway, and a multi-purpose building in Formigal. This was Aramon’s ambitious plan for the 2003-2006 seasons. They entrusted the execution of these projects to the MLN Group. Now, 20 years after the first construction work began at the Formigal ski resort, we look back at the work carried out.
The first area where work began was the gondola lift area, where a 50,000 m² parking lot was built. Work was also carried out on the A-136 road in the parking lot’s vicinity. In addition, a 4,000 m² multipurpose building was constructed within the parking area, housing garages, offices, a cafeteria, and shops.
Near the Spanish-French border, we completed a project involving two bridges connecting the Portalet parking area to the ski slopes and their facilities. This allowed us to span the Gállego River.
To ensure the project’s completion on schedule and facilitate the work of our staff, we had to set up three production lines: one for concrete, one for crushing, and one for aggregates. Furthermore, virtually 100% of the machinery used belonged to the company, and more than 40 employees were involved in the project.
In the first half of 2004, we were also awarded the contract to build a bridge and a footbridge for skiers over the Gállego River in the gondola area of the Formigal ski resort. This was located between the new car park in the gondola area and the new ski slopes.
THE LARGEST PROJECT
One of the largest projects we undertook was the construction of the Formigal Multipurpose Building in the gondola area of the Ski Resort. This included everything related to the building, such as the potable water supply, distribution pipeline, storage tank, and sanitation network connected to the Formigal Urbanization’s system. Although construction began in 2004, it was almost entirely completed in January 2006, due to some geotechnical issues that we were able to resolve by underpinning the foundation.
From that date onward, skiers were able to enjoy facilities with three floors. A 2,500 m² basement was designated for parking staff vehicles, ambulances, changing rooms, and storage; A ground floor of 2,500 m2 houses the service areas; and a first floor of 720 m2 is divided into two sections.
Finally, the Sextas parking garage in Formigal was completed. This project involved the demolition of the ski resort’s old office building, the filling of the land for the new roundabout, the remediation of the existing landfill, the construction of the parking garage surface, and the stabilization of the slope.
The MLN Group has always been deeply involved in its home region of Aragon. Therefore, these projects have always been significant milestones in the Group’s history. One of the reasons for this is the large influx of visitors that Aramon has experienced over the last 20 years, serving as an economic engine for the Autonomous Community.
