The groundbreaking ceremony for the rehabilitation project of the western wing of the former Provincial Children’s Residence in Huesca has now taken place. The building, which will be renovated to house comprehensive medical and nursing studies, will become an educational and architectural landmark.
The project focuses on the preservation and enhancement of the architectural heritage, with an emphasis on conserving the building’s historical elements. The work includes the renovation of the roof and exterior woodwork, which are in the most deteriorated state, as well as improvements to the building envelope through continuous insulation, reinforcement of floor slab edges, and structural connections.
Comprehensive Renovation and Sustainability
The rehabilitation plan incorporates a completely updated design for the building’s systems, including new electrical, HVAC, ventilation, telecommunications, fire protection, and audiovisual systems. A fully equipped bar/cafeteria is also planned.
In line with sustainability goals, the building will feature photovoltaic panels, a hybrid aerothermal and geothermal heating system, and underfloor heating, maximizing self-sufficient energy production and reducing its environmental impact.
Functional Space Layout
The building will have an optimized layout for training, administrative, and service activities:
Ground Floor: This floor will include four lecture halls, faculty meeting rooms, and a café/bar with a large seating area, kitchen, and storage. Staff changing rooms will also be included.
First Floor: This floor will house lecture halls and simulation labs with practical rooms and a control room for supervision, as well as changing rooms.
Second Floor: This floor will be dedicated to teaching laboratories, along with lecture halls and seminar rooms with greater capacity.
Third Floor: Located under the roof, this floor will house faculty offices, two seminar rooms, meeting rooms, and a wellness area with a kitchenette and vending machines.
